Associations

It's not easy being a writer, especially a solo writer. So I've joined a couple of associations in the past to get together with other writers, to hone my craft and my professionalism, and to find new ways to advance my career.

Those associations are:

• The Canadian Authors Association. If you're an author, and you're in Canada, you should consider joining them. I happen to be president of the Waterloo-Wellington Branch branch of the CAA.

• The Society for Technical Communication. They are easily the most important organization for technical writers in the world. Look fora branch near you -- especially if you're interested in entering a career in tech writing. Most branches have the best job boards in the business, too.

• Dove Tale Writers. A fun little editing circle in Kitchener. Some excellent writers there. They also have a blog.
