The Officer
My first novel. About a
quarter of it was written while
I was unemployed, and then working
at Fidelity investments; I hit the
90% mark in a week in Cuba, and
another month's work finished it
off. Unfortunately, it is a terrible
novel, and I'm not willing to put
the work required into it to make
it a good novel. I suspect it will
never be published, but I plan to
steal the only interesting character
for another work sometime.

I've been working on this
one for years, really. I wrote a
short story in 1998, most of it
in a single night; I wrote the novel
that the short story should have
been while working at Descartes
and Manulife, mostly in one- and
two-page bursts (a new technique
for me). Incidentally, the novel
was shortlisted for the Mount
Arrowsmith Novel-Writing Contest
in 2005.
Little
Green Tree of Hamilton published
the novel in May, 2006. Smart move!
Head honcho Dan Banko
is to be credited with superior
vision and judgement. I'll be doing
appearances and such all summer
-- see my events page for more info.

A novel that deals with
the Hamilton mafia in the modern
age. Having a good deal of Italian
heritage, and having grown up in
Hamilton, I'm fascinated with the
subject. I'm hoping that the novel
is at least passably interesting
to readers. It's only about 1/3
done so far, but I'm happy with
where it's going and I intend to
make it a full-length novel within
a year or so.
